It’s been an incredibly busy week for Beagles of all ages with numerous school cross country events taking place and the return of the Essex league. Elsewhere there was an amazing half and a weekend in Loughborough!

School’s Cross Country

We are thrilled to hear of all the amazing running that has taken place by our Beagles at various schools events over the last week. So many examples of athletes running new PB’s, finishing better than last year and just generally having more confidence that before. It’s been inspirational and we are so pleased to hear these stories! Unfortunately reporting on schools results is patchy to say the least so we rely very much on what are told – please do keep letting us know how your child does and apologies for any errors in the reporting.

Essex League XC

Saturday saw a brilliant start to the Essex XC league season for our Beagles. We are so incredibly proud of all the performances we saw and of the support for each other and from parents and friends. A big thank you too to everyone who helped with marshalling, car parking, photos, team managing, officiating etc. It really was a “Team Beagles” day!

The U13 3K race saw Frankie Edwards as first Beagle home in 10th place (12.21) with Ollie Johnson 20th (13:18) and Daniel Smith 24th (13:41). The U13 girls ran as a pack finishing closely together and banking the second team position which is a brilliant effort. Well done to Sophie Bickerstaff 9th (13:58), Ella Fagan 11th (14:02), Aria Sabado 12th (14:02) and Esme Thomas 13th (14.05).

Brilliant team work was also order of the day for our U15 girls over 4k with our team dominant and easily finishing as first team. The best example of the day of the endurance runners and sprinters competing alongside each other to maximise the team score. Congratulations to Olivia Forrest 1st (14.18), Evie Warn 2nd (15.02), Missy Tiller 4th (16:06), Isabel Forrest 9th (16:42), Stephanie Smith 16th (18:03), Nicole Hawkins 17th (18:19), Ella Gilder-Briggs 30th (20:34) and Ava Carter 33rd (21:28). The U15 boys also did a great job with Jude Hearn finishing 10th (14:39) and Jake Mitchell 22nd (16:18). Honourable mention to Mattie Delea who started brilliantly but suffered a hamstring issue mid race.

Our U17 men were led home in their 6k race by Max Sanderson who finished 4th (19:55) marginally missing out on the top 3. Preston Taylor was 6th after a fall (21:01), Louis Geater 27th (24:28) and Louis King 29th just making it to the line despite his hamstring problem (24:42). Mara Thomas was our sole U17 woman but ran strongly to finish 15th (27:53).

In the senior women’s 6.6k race Laura Durn was the only Beagle running and did a great job finishing 55th overall (8th in age group) – 31:10.

And finally our brilliant senior men who ensured we ended the day as well as we started! Running over 8k – Congratulations to James Wilson 92nd overall (33:17) and 8th in age group, Elliot Worth 106th (33:52), Yvo Heidemans 134th (35:19) and Stuart Crowther 167th (37:34). With over 250 runners taking part in the race they really have run well. Special thanks to Daniel Esterhuysen and Laurence Sanderson for kindly stepping in for photography duties!

Essex XC League – Next Steps!

Please remember that all future rounds of the Essex XC league will require you to hold an England Athletics licence and to pre register before the event on Roster.

The next race (on 28th October) can be entered here – Roster Athletics · Essex Cross Country League – Round 2 Gloucester Park – please do this as soon as possible as bibs are being ordered!

Please be reminded too that sprint coach Mark Smith holds a supply of spikes which are available for purchase from him at any track night so please do go and see him if yours are blunt or need replacing!

Chelmsford Marathon

Daniel Jaycock made a sensational start to his marathon career on Sunday in Chelmsford finishing ninth overall and first in his age group in a brilliant time of 2:55.58. And this was just his test run marathon ahead of Valencia! We can’t wait to see the results of the real thing. Well done Daniel a real testament to your commitment to your training.

Parkrun and Junior parkun round up

A quiet Saturday with many runners attending the Essex Cross Country event but Scott Brooks (18:39 PB) continued his fine run of form, taking 1st place at Wickford Memorial and picking up his fastest Parkrun time to date.

It was a markedly chillier Sunday morning for our juniors compared to last week, but we still had representation around the courses. At Hutton Rec., Jamie Murphy (08:14 PB) continued his fine progression with a first finish and a new PB! Finishing 6th and just outside his PB was Ethan Wilson (09:05), while 1st female across the line was Nora Heidemans (09:31). Rafe Matthews* (9:59), Jude Matthews* (10:11), Max Wilson (11:23), Camilla Nash*(12:01) also ran well. At Lake Meadows, Frankie Edwards (07:42) ran strongly as usual, finishing 2nd from 90 participants.

Over at Harrow Lodge, Missy Tiller (07:13) continued her great run of form taking 1st place by nearly a minute from runner-up and fellow Beagle, Aria Lily Sabado (08:12 PB) who took 20 seconds off her previous best 2k run. Emily Brewington (08:39) put in her usual gritty performance to take 4th. There was another Beagle to come with Evie Foley(09:20 PB) in 7th, also posting her best ever parkrun time, well done! Finally, despite battling a heavy cold, Liam Worth (10:36) finished 5th taking on Northlands Park junior parkrun in Basildon for the first time; a friendly, and flat, 3½ lap course run on a mix of pavement and grass.

Well done to all our runners this weekend. Note for parents, if your child has an * by their name, please help our editor by adding Brentwood Beagles as their club under their parkrun profile (groups). Feel free to contact us if you need help setting this up.

YTP Kick Off Weekend

Erin Delea and coaches Paul and Marc travelled to Loughborough at the weekend for the first Training Camp of the two year Youth Talent Programme (YTP). Established in 2012, the programme identifies and supports talented teenage athletes, providing them with world-class coaching, facilities and opportunities to progress in the sport. Selection for the YTP is highly competitive and being accepted is genuinely prestigious and seen as a mark of a promising future in athletics. The programme has a proven track record of developing young athletes, with many graduates going on to represent England and Great Britain at international championships and the Olympics. This weekend, Erin worked on her Discus Throw under the guidance of her personal coaches, Paul and Marc and YTP coaches from England Athletics including former Olympians.

Coming up

Travelling a bit further afield for this weekend’s SEAA cross country we have a number of teams off to Wormwood Scrubs. Good luck to them. A number of junior Beagles will also be heading to Lee Valley for the first minithon of the year – have a wonderful time!
