Eastern T&F Championships
The Eastern AA T&F Championships at the University Track Cambridge saw some hot weather, hot medals and hot personal bests from some of the Brentwood Beagles who made the journey.
Poppy Horton U15G opened the Beagles day with the heats of the 100m easily seeing her progress to the final with a new PB of 12.97. Improving this further in the final with a National Championships age group qualifying time and new PB of 12.89.
Opening the field events was Katie Hawkins in the U15G Shot, putting in a great performance of 7m 17cm.
The 800m had Beagles spread across several age groups, all with straight finals. First up was Amalie Twydell, Aria Sabado and Robyn Colyer in the U13G, Amelia determined the pace in the early part of the race with Aria tucked in the pack, and Robyn judging a good pace. Amalia finished strongly with a PB of 2:38.16 and Beagles first medal of the day Bronze for 3rd place, Aria close behind in 4th with a PB of 2:41.88 and Robyn PB of 2:49.29.
Missy Tiller U15G was next in the 800m again setting a strong early pace, though her competitors working off this pace reeled her back, finishing with 2:27.32 and another Bronze medal for Beagles. Mattie Delea was the sole male Beagle representative for the 800m, in his U15B race he showed great control and pace judgement, finishing in Silver medal position with 2:06.84.
Adam Armour U13B opened his field events in the Shot, with just shy of his best putting 6m 36cm, later in the Long Jump he finished with 3.63m.
As we moved into the afternoon, we saw a few early finals. In the 300m straight final U15B Charlie Lingley ran a new PB of 45.82. Later he followed this with another PB in his 200m with 29.33.
The 300m U15G saw some shuffling and reseeding as the planned heats turned to a straight final with 3 Beagles, Stephanie Smith, Nicole Hawkins and Daisy Willingale as part of the line up. The first 3 athletes home saw all 3 beat the existing Championship record, Stephanie being in the silver medal position and new PB of 41.55. Nicole just outside the medals in 4th with 42.91 and Daisy setting a new PB of 44.88. Daisy was straight to the Long Jump which was scheduled for the same time as the 300m, and quickly set about setting another PB within a few minutes with 4m 41cm.
The mid-afternoon saw even hotter temperatures and Beagles using the heat to their benefits in the 200m. Robyn Colyer back on the track from her earlier 800m, qualifying to the final in the U13G with a new PB of 29.52. Between the 200m heat and final, Robyn achieved another PB in the Long Jump with 4m 06cm, then back to the final of the 200m with 29.81.
Ava Carter, Poppy Horton and Katie Lowe in the U15G 200m heats ran strongly with Ava a PB of 26.64 (wind assisted +2.2m/s), Poppy also a PB with 26.69 (+0.2m/s) progress to the final. Katie had a solid race with 27.34 though did not progress. The final saw Poppy and Ava just outside the medals in 4th and 5th and 26.85 and 27.00 respectively.
The U17W 200m saw Ella Gilder-Briggs smoothly progress to the final running 26.70 in her heat. Unfortunately a slight twinge in the transition from bend to straight in the final brought Ella into the finish in 4th with 26.88.
Kairhys Hoyte concluded the Beagles 200m showing great consistency in his heat and final with 28.57 and 28.47 being only 1/100th of second from his PB.
In the 3000m Preston Taylor U17M lead out the field, and stayed leading throughout bringing home Beagles first Gold medal in 9min 17.33.
Jude Hearn contested the U15B 1500m, running a strategic race and sharp turn of speed in the final 100m, brought home another Beagle medal, Silver, and yet another Beagle PB of 4min 18.15.
The Beagle medal haul of 6 from only 18 athletes, with some 13 PBs nicely concluded the Championships.
Thanks @marksmith.sprints for the photos and report!

Triathlon News
London Youth Games Aquathlon
Congratulations to our Havering based Beagles who were selected for the London Youth Games Aquathlon team. Taking place in the London Aquatics centre, the swim/run competition saw Aria Sabado finish 4th in the year 7 girls event, Summer Smith finish 1st in the year 8 girls event and Orly Morton finish 1st in the year 9 boys competition. As a whole team the Havering borough finished in third place. Well done all!
Super Series Triathlon
Olivia Forrest travelled to Mallory Park to take part in the latest round of Super Series competition. On Saturday an individual time trial set the places for Sunday’s finals which saw Olivia competing in the B final and putting in a good performance, improving on her Saturday times. Olivia also took part in her first relay triathlon event along with three of her East region team mates.
Mallory Park Triathlon
Also taking the trip to Mallory Park on Sunday were Heidi Woodley and Sophie Bickerstaff who took part in the Tri star 3 and Tri star 2 events respectively. Sophie produced a great performance getting better with each element to finish 4th overall. Heidi was unfortunately subject to some confusing marshalling with half the field completing one more lap on the bike than the other competitors leading to results that didn’t really resemble what had happened! Valuable experience however.
European Biathle Championships
Congratulations to Madison Kindler and Olivia Forrest who spent the early part of the week in Madeira representing Great Britain at the Pentathlon GB / Federação Portuguesa do Pentatlo Moderno Biathle European championships.
Biathle involves competitors completing a run / swim / run course with individual, team and mixed relay competitions taking place.
Both girls came away as double gold medallists and European champions for the team and mixed relay competitions – Madison in the U13 category and Olivia in U17. Both girls also picked up individual silver medals in their age categories.
Well done both – brilliant achievements!
English Schools Cup Final
The final of the English Schools Cup took place in Stoke on Saturday with a number of Beagles competing with their school teams against other schools from all over the country.
George Alder helped Campion School to third place in the junior boys competition with his 1500m run of 5:10.5 and relay (team) 54.3.
Coopers and Coborn School came third in the junior girls place thanks in part to the efforts of Summer Smith who won the girls 1500m in 4:39.5 and threw 18.35 in the discus. And to Aria Sabado who race 800m in 2:37.0 and relay (team) 58.2.
Isobel McLennan supported Chelmsford County High School to 11th place with her 1.17m high jump. Esme Thomas was also in the team running 2:40.3 in the 800m. Both girls were in the relay (team) 59.8.
Finally in the intermediate girls competition, Aisling O’Leary helped Brentwood Ursuline to 7th place with her run in the 800m – 2:42.4 and javelin throw on 19.07, as did Grace Smith who ran 45.9 in the 300m and jumped 8.60m in the triple jump.
Well done to all a brilliant experience!
Moulton 5 Mile Race Walk
A huge well done to Race Walker Emma Dyos who made her club debut at the Moulton 5 mile race walk coming a very impressive 3rd female. With the presentations being made by Paris Olympian Callum Wilkinson it was a particular special prize giving!
Essex Track Relays
Congratulations to all of the Beagles teams at Sunday’s Essex track relays at Southend. In conditions that ranged from bright sunshine to torrential rain, our teams continued to give their all. As a result the club came away with one gold medal, four silver medals and a bronze medal!
U13 girls 4×100 – 6th – 63.8… a strong first leg from Caitlin Phillips before an unfortunate missed handover to Ava O’Neal lost valuable time but still a strong leg and good handover to Betsy Gilder-Briggs who ran well to Natanya Itola with a fast last leg.
U13 boys 4×100 – 3rd – 58.6… a great team effort with Matthew Cottee setting off well, a strong second leg by Max Cheetham, a good run by Isaac Norris and a determined final 100 by Robbie Adcock to take bronze!
U17 men 4×100 5th – 49.9.. a mixed team of sprinters and endurance runners saw a best effort by the team. Teddy Adcock passed over the baton well to Tobias Maitland who sprinted strongly to Preston Taylor. Preston gave his all to get the baton to Max Sanderson who ran fast to the line.
U15 girls 4×300 – 1st – 2:53.1. A great team performance with a really determined and confident effort to take gold and a stadium record. A strong first leg by Ava Carter, with a good handover to Poppy Horton. Poppy sprinted confidently to pass the baton to Nicole Hawkins who took off at speed to hand to Stephanie Smith who successfully brought the baton home in first.
U15 boys 4×300 – 2nd – 3:06.9… A really strong start by Luca Patrick put the team in front, Charlie Lingley ran well in the second leg to hand over to Ollie Johnson. Ollie sprinted confidently to pass to Jake Mitchell who ran a great final leg.
U13 boys 3×800 – 8th – 8:30.2… A great learning experience for our young boys team with a committed first leg by Adam Armour, a tenacious second leg by Ollie Trevor and a determined finish by Daniel Smith.
U15 girls 3×800 – 2nd – 7:36.9… With 2 of the 3 members stepping up from the 300, our U15s did a great job of tactical racing to earn silver. First leg runner Nicole Hawkins pushed hard at the start, Isabel Forrest paced well to hand over in second whilst Stephanie Smith conserved her energy when needed for an impressive last 100m sprint to the line.
U15 boys 3×800 – 7th – 7:49.2 – the unfortunate victims of the worst weather of the day, a race that started in sunshine and resulted in hail at the end of the first lap for Frankie Edwards who stayed committed throughout. Ollie Johnson bravely still stepped out to take the baton and ran well before handing over to Jake Mitchell who gave his all to get to the line (and some shelter!)
U17 woman 3×800 – 2nd – 7:21.6 – A really strong start by Missy Tiller who ran shoulder to shoulder with her competitor throughout before handing over to Evie Warn who set off at speed. Unfortunately Evie suffered from pain in the second lap but bravely made it to the end of her stint, handing over to Olivia Forrest who reduced the gap bringing the team home second.
U17 men 3×800 – 2nd – 6:22.5 – final race of the day saw Jude Hearn with a mega first lap and a good second one to hand over to Preston Taylor. Preston ran with his usual confidence and determination to continue to push forward and give Max Sanderson the baton. Max did all he could to apply pressure to the front runner but sadly ran out of track. A well deserved silver!
Thank you to all who came and supported – brilliant team effort from you as well!
Medway and Maidstone Open
Also on Sunday, Amalie Twydell travelled to Kent for the Medway and Maidstone Open event to take on the 800m. A good run saw her finish second in her age group just outside her PB – 2:40.35.
Parkrun & Junior parkrun round-up (6th and 7th July)
An especially un-summery morning for our intrepid 5k runners as a huge downpour affected Beagles at local events. No more so than at Chelmsford where nearly 500 runners dodged puddles, mud and slippery surfaces around an already changed course. Despite all this, Adam Armour (21:04) ran strongly to finish 30th overall, while Oliver Weston-Stokes (22:40) also did well and finished 60th. Also taking part were Liam Worth (27:17) and Elliot Worth (27:18) finishing just outside the top 200.
At Raphael Parkrun, Stuart Crowther (20:21 PB) ran strongly to finish 12th overall and claim a course best. Stuart also achieved the highest age grade of the event at just over 80%. Simon Knightbridge* (21:05) also took part, finishing 18th. Meanwhile at Harrow Lodge Matthew Cottee (23:24 PB) ran well to collect a new course PB, while a little further back was Nathan Cottee (29:12) and Owen Cottee (29:52 PB) who placed 73rd and 83rd respectively.
At Brentwood, just the one runner as Erin Delea (26:03) finished 29th and 2nd female from 75 runners. Further afield atLullingstone, Keith Thornton (22:37 PB) finished 5th and claimed a course PB while at Felixstowe, Alex Young (17:58) finished 4th in a high calibre event, with Isabelle Young (20:49) and Cameron Young (22:31) making impressive course debuts to finish 21st and 40th respectively.
On Sunday, calmer conditions greeted a small number of our younger runners attempting their 2k efforts. At Hutton Rec., Jamie Murphy (08:11) ran well to finish 1st, comfortably ahead of 2nd place, while Joshua Barke (09:26) did well too, just a few seconds outside his PB time. Camilla Nash (10:37) finished 14th. Just the one Beagle at Harrow Lodge as Finley Smith (09:08) finished 5th in a good time, also not far off a course best.
