This week saw the last round of our EYAL season with brilliant performances across our teams, some brilliant sprinting at Lee Valley and we also saw European success for the Beagles and Team GB at the U18 athletic championships – an amazing achievement!

European U18 Championships

A big occasion for the Beagles this week with GB representation from Olivia Forrest at the European Athletics U18 Championships in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia. With soaring temperatures and a packed final of 16 of the best U18 3000m runners in Europe, Olivia approached the race with a smile on her face and everyone at the club behind her. Worth noting that Olivia was the youngest person in her race and almost the youngest at the entire championships!

A drama packed race ensued, a rare false start in a distance race, followed by a second sprint round the first bend. Olivia led the early laps before swapping places with the other front runners. With two laps to go the German competitor took off only to be hunted down by Olivia and with 200 to go. A fierce sprint round the final bend, with Olivia leading onto the home straight, a “friendly” push saw her stumble, recover and finish with the bronze medal and a new PB of 9:21.66.

Well done Olivia, we are all very proud!

Lee Valley Sprints

Wednesday evening saw our sprint squad head to Lee Valley for their competitive sprints evening. The session opened with the 100m, James Gillingham putting in a good performance with 11.26. Tobias Maitland started strongly and maintained running a respectable 12.23. Wrapping up the Beagles 100m saw Stuart Carter and Stephanie Smith in a head to head with adjacent lanes. Stuart taking the opportunity to improve on his recent PB and ducked under 13 seconds with a fabulous 12.98, Stephanie competing at the distance for the first time in 11 months also a great new PB of 13.45 (both legal at +0.2m/s wind, 2.0 being the limit).

In the 200m we saw another head to head Beagles battle with Ava Carter and Nicole Hawkins contending the same seeded heat. Crossing the line first Ava ran a strong 27.0 pipping Nicole to the line by only 2/100ths of a second. Nicole’s 27.02 sees a brilliant new PB with a legal +0.7m/s wind.

Thanks @marksmith.sprints for the photos and report!

Sutcliffe Park Open

Also on Wednesday night but over in Cambridgeshire, our endurance runners also saw new PB’s. Amalie Twydell took almost 2 seconds off her previous best over 800m – 2:36.84 and Owen Adams took half a second off 400m – 51.40.

Parkrun and Junior parkun round up

With the start of the summer holidays, we anticipate seeing a few new venues visited by our Beagles appearing in our weekly update. The precedent was set by 2 runners who attended Clermont Waterfront all the way over in Florida as Paul Johnson (21:46) finished 16th and Ollie Johnson (23:00), 20th. Closer to home, making their debuts at Gunpowder, were Emily Brewington (22:19) who ran well to finish 43rd and 8th female, while sister Freya Brewington (29:13) also ran strongly.

At Raphael, Simon Knightbridge* (18:28) ran well to finish 5th and take the highest age grade of the event at just under 80%. Also running were Matthew Jones (20:24) who finished 11th and Stuart Bennett (31:36) 192nd. Over at Chelmsford, just the 2 runners as Adam Armour (20:58) took 40th and Oliver-Weston Stokes (25:40) 235th from a large field of 765.

Finally, a good turnout at Brentwood with 7 Beagles in action. There was an enthralling tussle between Daniel Esterhuysen (21:43 PB) 11th, Stuart Crowther (21:43) 12th and Lianne Esterhuysen (21:46 PB) 13th, with the trio racing to the line with Daniel just pipping Stuart and claiming a course PB at the same time. Elliot Worth (22:09) finished 14th, with Keith Thornton (22:46) just 3 places back in 17th. Erin Delea (28:56) and Danel Esterhuysen (32:49) also enjoyed a good morning workout.

On Sunday a warm morning greeted our junior 2k runners with 2 Beagles attending Lake Meadows as Ivy Kernohan (10:33) finished 47th and Sage Kernohan (11:21 PB) 58th. Meanwhile, there was the usual good turnout at Hutton Rec., with 7 Beagles running. Colm Forrest (07:37 PB) ran hard from the start among a competitive group at the front, taking 1st finisher by 7 seconds and improving his best time by 5 seconds. Robert Barke (08:15) took 5th while Liam Worth (08:48 PB) ran strongly again to take 14 seconds off his 2k PB, in addition to the 12 the previous week, great work! In 17th was Jessica Thomson* (09:48), with Chloe Thomson* (10:15) not far behind in 22nd. Elise Gosling (11:15) finished 32nd while Joshua Thomson* (11:20) took 35th

Well done to all our runners this weekend. Note for parents, if your child has an * by their name, please help our editors by adding Brentwood Beagles as their club under their parkrun profile (groups). And if you ran, and aren’t featured at all, then please add the club to your profile so we can find you!!! Feel free to contact us if you need help setting this up.

Triathlon News

Eton Dorney Triathlon

On Sunday the Eton Dorney Triathlon saw more success for our Beagles. Aria Sabado took part in her first triathlon overcoming adversity with the bike rail collapsing on her bike and then forgetting to take off her helmet in the confusion! She still managed a brilliant 5th overall / 2nd in her region in the Tristar 2 category – 23:42.

Summer Smith continued her good run of triathlons with a first place finish in the Tristar 3 category – 22:50. And Blossom Smith came third in her Tristar 1 race – 16:43.

Well done all!
