August is where a summer of training comes home to roost, and our Beagles made the most of every opportunity. From a Canadian adventure for one of our juniors to a PB filled Essex 5K Championships in Colchester, the final Eastern Young Athletes’ League fixture of the season in Barnet and a huge club turnout at the Southend Open, there was barely a weekend without a Beagles vest on show.
Track opens, road races, quadrathlons and throws festivals: this month had everything, and the number of personal bests tells the story. You can catch up on our previous round-up if you missed it, then read on for all of August’s results.
August at a glance
- Sophia Davies competed at the Ontario Summer Games in Canada, winning the 1200m (3:41.85), 2000m (6:34.34) and 800m (2:19.87).

- U10 Margot Zayman won the howler throw at the East Region FMC Festival in Norfolk with 27.61m.
Ontario Summer Games, Ontario, Canada
A summer to remember for Sophia Davies (6:26), who has been in Canada picking up a whole range of amazing results, including a trip to the provincial Ontario Summer Games. Sophia clocked 6:26 for 2000m, 3:35 for 1200m, 2:19 for 800m and 10:17 for 3000m across the series of races, and then added three race wins: 1st in the 1200m in 3:41.85, 1st in the 2000m in 6:34.34 and 1st in the 800m in 2:19.87. What a way to spend a summer!
Southern Inter-Counties Championships
Two Beagles pulled on the Essex vest at the Southern Inter-Counties Championships and both did the county proud. Madison Kindler (4:49.60) was a brilliant winner of the U14 1500m, while Max Cheetham (11.72) sprinted to 4th in the U14 100m in 11.72 and backed it up with 7th in the 200m in 25.22. Representing your county against the best in the south is no small thing, so well done both.
Watford Open, 5 August
Cooler conditions at the Watford Open led to some very strong 800m running from the Beagles. Lianne Esterhuysen (2:29.57) produced a really strong performance in the U14 race, pushing the pace and surging to the finish for a new PB. U16 Amalie Twydell (2:27.09) went through a storming first lap on her way to a new best, and U16 Ollie Johnson (2:12.0) also came away with a new best.
In the fastest race of the night, U20 Max Sanderson (1:54.76) took his advantage in the closing lap ahead of clubmate Owen Adams (1:55.86), who had led through a 54 second first lap and finished just a tiny fraction outside his PB. Thanks as always to @coach66flix for the photos.

Aberdeen AAC Open Graded Meeting, Aberdeen
A long trip north for two of our U14 girls at the Aberdeen AAC open graded meeting. Jess Davidson (4:52.73) ran a new 1500m PB, and Madison Kindler (3:42.2) took on the 1200m. Great to see Beagles racing wherever the summer takes them.
Colchester Friday Night 5K and Essex 5K Championships, Colchester

Then came the 5K, where V40 James Connor (15:01) ran a season’s best and was crowned Essex champion in his age group. Here is how the rest of the Beagles got on:
