July is the month when the summer season reaches its peak, and the Beagles answered the call at every level. There were national titles at the English Schools AA Championships in Birmingham and the England Athletics Age Group Championships in Bedford, Essex relay gold at Thurrock, county medals for our U12s and two huge Eastern Young Athletes’ League squads at Havering.

Add in open meetings at Watford, road races at Billericay, Dunton and Shrewsbury, plus a schools cup final and an England vest, and you have a month packed with personal bests from year 3 juniors right through to our masters. If you missed our last update you can catch up with the June round-up, then read on for all of July’s results.

July at a glance

  • Madison Kindler became Junior Girls 1500m champion at the English Schools AA Athletics Championships at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, winning in 4:29.51.
  • Sophie Bickerstaff won the England Athletics U15 3000m title at Bedford in 10:18.09 and also took U16 silver, finishing second overall in the race.
  • Max Sanderson finished 4th in England at the England Athletics U20 Championships in 8:35.47, set an 800m PB of 1:53.11 at Watford, a 1500m PB of 3:51.73 at the BMC Grand Prix in Watford and won his age group at the Essex 5 Mile Championships in 27:11.
  • At the Essex Relay Championships in Thurrock, the U16 girls quartet of Jess Bone, Robyn Colyer, Olivia Bullen and Dolci Hoyte won 4x300m Essex gold in 3:07.1, while the U16 girls 3x800m team took bronze.
  • Brentwood Beagles finished 5th overall at the Eastern Young Athletes' League fixture in Havering, with the U18 girls 3rd in their age group and the U14 girls 4th.
  • At the Essex U12 Championships in Thurrock, Evie Foley won high jump gold with 1.27m and Isabelle Holme won the 800m in 2:35.5, with bronzes for Milena Nevill and Evie Foley.

English Schools Track and Field Cup Final, 4 July

The month began with school vests on show at the English Schools Track and Field Cup Final, and Beagles featured strongly in two very successful teams. For the Coopers and Coborn Junior Girls, Isabella Dunbar (13.1) took on the 75m hurdles and added 1.38m in the high jump, Isobel Larner (5:05.5) doubled up with the 1500m and a javelin throw of 18.34m, and Emily Brewington (5:17.9) also raced the 1500m. Their team finished second, a brilliant result in a national final.

The Coopers Inter Girls went one better and won their competition to take the schools title. Summer Smith (20.76m) threw in the discus and then came back to run 4:37.1 in the 1500m, while Aria Sabado (2:27.9) contributed a strong 800m. Competing for Campion, Will Fagan (4:54.8) rounded off the Beagles contribution in the 1500m.

Billericay 10k, Billericay

Three Beagles took to the roads at the Billericay 10k. Elliot Worth (42.45) was 56th male and 7th in his age group, Stuart Crowther (45:54) was 105th male and 4th in his age group, and Lorraine Massarella (46.30) was 14th female and 7th in her age group. A tidy morning’s work from all three.

Eastern Young Athletes' League, Havering: U18 Women and U16 Girls

The Eastern Young Athletes’ League took the club to Havering for a fixture filled with personal performances and teamwork. The U18 women finished 3rd in their age group despite being a pretty small squad, with everyone doubling and trebling up to maximise the score.

The U16 girls also produced strong performances with a long list of personal bests:

  • Amalie Twydell (300m 47.94, 800m 2:27.27 PB, shot 6.08m)
  • Sophia Davies (1500m 4:42.48), competing up an age group
  • Isabelle Young (1500m 5:10.96)
  • Summer Smith (discus 20.96m PB)

There were relays too, with the U18 women’s team of Miriam, Daisy, Zara and Daisy clocking 55.50, and the U16 girls team of Dolci, Robyn, Amalie and Sophia running 57.12.

England Athletics U20 Championships

On the same weekend, Max Sanderson (8:35.47) lined up at the England Athletics U20 Championships and came home 4th, which makes him 4th in England in his age group. A superb performance at national level.

Eastern Young Athletes' League, Havering: U14 Girls, U16 Boys, U14 Boys and U18 Men

Finally, the U18 men’s team, which was mostly made up of U16 boys competing up an age group. Patrick Barden (100m 12.19, 200m 25.04) and Kairhys Hoyte (100m 12.43 PB, 200m 25.75 PB, triple jump 10.75m) both stepped up a year, and Jeremy Li (12.79) completed the sprint line up over 100m. Crown to Crown

A hot evening for the Crown to Crown, and our athletes braved the heat to get stuck in. Results were still outstanding at the time of posting, but Zara Morley, Adam Armour and Ollie Johnson were all racing at the front end of the field. Well done to all three for taking it on in those conditions.

Watford Open Meeting, Watford

An 800m and 3000m evening at Watford, and once again our athletes braved the heat. Amalie Twydell (2:29.81) ran close to her best over two laps, Lianne Esterhuysen (2:31:31) came away with a new personal best, and George Bangs (2:07.22) recorded a season’s best.

In the quickest 800m of the night, Max Sanderson (1:53.11) smashed his personal best with a superb race. Over 3000m, Sophie Bickerstaff (9:51.19) looked very strong on her way to a new PB. Thanks to @coach66flix for the photos.

English Schools AA Athletics Championships, Alexander Stadium, Birmingham

Incredibly hot conditions at the Alexander Stadium made this a tough day in Birmingham, especially for the endurance runners, who did exactly what was needed to qualify and saved the big effort for the finals. Summer Smith (10.09.71) came through her Inter Girls 3000m, Heidi Woodley (4:43.07) won her Inter Girls 1500m heat to qualify, and Madison Kindler (4:44.68) booked her place in the Junior Girls 1500m final.

Elsewhere on the programme, Emmanuel Oydele (13.97) set a new PB in the U16 100m hurdles representing Hampshire, and William Adenagbe (12.58m) produced a new PB in the Junior Boys shot put.

Then came the finals, and they were very competitive races in high temperatures. Heidi Woodley (4:37.85) looked strong in the early part of the race leading the pack and finished 7th in the Inter Girls 1500m. Summer Smith (9:56.13) did some tough running to place 4th overall in the Inter Girls 3000m. Best of all, Madison Kindler (4:29.51) was a clear winner of the Junior Girls 1500m, executing a strong strategy to become English Schools champion. Photos thanks to @coach66flix.

BMC Grand Prix, Watford

Back to Watford for the BMC Grand Prix, where Max Sanderson (3:51.73) added another personal best to his collection over 1500m. Quality racing producing quality times.

Shrewsbury 5K, Shrewsbury

An England vest for James Connor (15.29) at the Shrewsbury 5K, where he ran a very fast time to finish 5th overall and 3rd in his age category. Representing your country on the roads is a special day, and James did it in style.

Essex Relay Championships, Thurrock

Baton changing, team spirit and county medals at the Essex Relay Championships in Thurrock, with the U16 girls the stars of the day.

Over 4x100m, the U14 boys A team of Max Cheetham, Harry King, Alex Wright and Daniel Ayandare qualified for the final with 51.70 in the heat and finished 6th in the final in 52.60. The U14 boys B team of Hadley Sando, Zac Niyazi, Austin Lever and Jude McNicholl ran well in the heats, clocking 58.40. The U14 girls quartet of Isabella Dunbar, Lucia Sando, Idia Otabor and Emily Brewington finished in 59.50.

The U16 girls team of Jess Bone, Robyn Colyer, Olivia Bullen and Dolci Hoyte ran 54.5 in the 4x100m heat and then a much stronger 52.6 in the final for 4th. The same four then became Essex champions over 4x300m, winning in 3:07.1. The U16 boys team of Kenny Onwuka, Ollie Johnson, Patrick Barden and Joseph Olaoluwabowale got the baton round in 49.6 over 4x100m and followed it with a good effort of 2:51.0 over 4x300m.

In the 3x800m, the U14 boys A team of Henry Pinato, Freddie Bangs and Austin Lever missed out on the bronze medal by the narrowest of margins, finishing 4th in 7:45.0, while the B team of Edward Cornwall, Hadley Sando and Zac Niyazi finished in 8:48.80. The U14 girls A team of Lianne Esterhuysen, Emily Brewington and Haysan So ran 7:55.90, with the B team of Rosa Moss, Isabella Dunbar and Lucia Sando recording 9:08.6. The U16 girls team of Aria Sabado, Isabelle Young and Amalie Twydell were bronze medallists in 7:35.30, and the U16 boys team of Adam Armour, Ollie Johnson and George Bangs got their baton round in 7:07.00.

Essex U12 Championships, Thurrock

A big day for our youngest competitors at the Essex U12 Championships in Thurrock, where two Beagles became Essex champions and two more picked up bronze medals.

In the high jump, Evie Foley (1.27m) took Essex gold with a personal best, Milena Nevill (1.06m) claimed bronze with a PB of her own, and Leo Boisvert (1.10m) also jumped a PB.

Best jumps in the long jump came from Alex Smith (3.70m), Milena Nevill (3.07m), Noah Johnson (2.92m), Sofia Boisvert (2.90m), Lily Etherington (2.87m), Luke Morris (2.81m) and Arlo Johnson (2.63m).

The U12 girls 800m brought a second county title, with Isabelle Holme (2:35.5) a dominant winner. She was followed home by Thea Clark (2:51.5), Nadia Price (2:56.7), Evie Foley (3:02.6) and Nora Heidemans (3:18.6).

The U12 boys 800m had a big Beagles presence: Jude Deal (2:37.5), Colm Forrest (2:38.6), James Fitzgerald (2:42.8), Thomas Howlett (2:42.9), George Kyprianou (2:43.4), Zak Robinson (2:43.7), Leo Boisvert (2:44.6) and Liam Worth (2:58.7).

Over 75m, the boys were led by Alex Smith (11.4), with Thomas Howlett (11.5), Leo Boisvert (11.8), Zak Robinson (11.9), George Kyprianou (12.2), Noah Johnson (12.3), Arlo Johnson (12.5) and Luke Morris (13.5) all racing hard.

In the girls 75m heats, Evie Foley (11.3) and Lily Etherington (11.9) both qualified for the semi final, with Abigail Lowe (12.0), Milena Nevill (12.4) and Sofia Boisvert (12.9) also in action. Evie Foley then ran 11.0 in the semi final and repeated 11.0 in the final to take bronze. National Trial Championships

A brilliant result at the National Trial Championships, where Jessica Davidson took the U14 age group title with a superb run. First place on a national stage is something to savour.

BFTTA Meeting

Sprinting for the masters at the BFTTA, where Stuart Carter (12.71) ran two rounds of the 100m and showed great consistency, backing up his first run with 12.78 in round two.

Essex 5 Mile Championships

Back on the roads, Max Sanderson (27:11) produced a great run at the Essex 5 Mile Championships to finish 1st in the U20 age group and 5th overall.

Watford Open Graded Meeting, Watford

Racing over 200m, 1500m and 3000m at the Watford Open Graded Meeting. Max Cheetham (24.72) opened proceedings in the U14 200m.

The 1500m races produced a string of strong runs. Madison Kindler (4:27.29) added another great run to her season, Lianne Esterhuysen (4:53.89) looked very strong for a personal best, Jess Davidson (4:57.51) also took a PB, Sarena So (5:05.41) recorded a season’s best and Haysan So (5:10.13) put in a good run. George Bangs (4:15.06) took a new PB in the U16 race.

England Athletics Age Group Championships, Bedford

A national title to finish the month in style. At the England Athletics Age Group Championships in Bedford, Sophie Bickerstaff (10:18.09) won the U15 3000m title and, racing in the combined field, also took the U16 silver medal by finishing second overall in the race. An outstanding day.

Dunton 10K, Dunton

The inaugural running of the Dunton 10K saw Rob Lankester (43.42) take second place. A brilliant way to put a Beagles vest in the first ever results list for a new local race.

Norman Park Open

A final track outing at Norman Park, where U16 George Bangs (2:03.19) knocked out another 800m personal best. A fine way to round off a busy July.
