The cold weather has really hit this week so a huge well done to everyone who has been at training and to those who took part in the wide range of events that happened over the weekend. We know the weather can be a real challenge but it’s also a great way of learning about performance in different conditions. That said please do keep an eye on Spond in case we do need to cancel sessions at short notice if the track is unusable in the icy conditions – we will alert you!

Sportshall

On Saturday five of our Beagles travelled to Chelmsford for the last in the series of the Sportshall events. These athletic skill based sessions have been a really good way of having a bit of fun competition over the last few months and we keep our fingers crossed that some of our athletes may get selected to represent Essex in the regional final at the end of January.

Intercounties XC

Three of our endurance runners were selected to represent Essex at the SEAA intercounties XC event in Horspath, Oxford on Saturday. Featuring a strong standard of competition from across the South of England and a tricky cross country course it really was a true test of skill. We are really pleased to say that Mattie Delea ran brilliant for the U13 boys team finishing 25th out of the 106 runners (10:56) and helping the team to a third place finish. In the U15 girls event Olivia Forrest kept up her brilliant run of form to finish third overall (13:38) with Evie Warn, still fighting back from illness, 63rd (15:07). Well done to all three and congratulations again on your Essex vests.

Minithon

Saturday saw a number of our junior Beagles head to Lee Valley to take part in their minithon event. A great opportunity to try out different disciplines – each athlete can do three events and then medals are awarded to the best overall performances during the day. It’s about good all round skills and not just great ability in one event! The athletes all got to meet Ojie Edoburun a team GB sprinter who was responsible for handing out the medals!

Official results are yet to be published but we do have some details.

Fynn Anderson – 60m – 9.43, 200m – 31.48, 600m – 1:52.82 – Gold medal performance

Elsie Martin-Bouchareb – 60m hurdles – 12.25

Well done too to Zoe Jones, not yet old enough to compete in the event, she did a great job as chief cheerleader and won the “fun” sprint race.

BFTTA

On Sunday we had a different group of Beagles travel to Lee Valley to take part in the BFTTA open.  A lively meet with some incredibly competitive events it was a joy to watch our athletes give their best and achieve new personal bests. Congratulations to all who took part.

Blake Rubery and Ollie Trevor also competed in the long jump but those results are yet to appear.

Parkrun and junior parkrun

Well done to everyone who embraced the cold weekend weather and still made it out for a run. We had Beagles in a variety of locations this weekend. Parkrun Saturday saw a brilliant new PB at Valentines Park for Louis Geater (19:44), third place and a first sub 20 minute 5k – we’re so proud of the way you are demolishing your personal bests at the moment – keep it up! At Billericy, Elliot Worth finished second (19:10) whilst at Brentwood Daniel Jaycock finished third (21:01) with Stuart Crowther just behind him (21:39). Steve Danby (24:07) and Jasper Jaycock (26:02) were also running well at the same course. Further afield Isabel Forrest ran at Levesden parkrun taking the age group record and a new parkrun PB (20.12).

Sunday was really icy so low numbers at all junior parkruns. So it was particularly impressive that Ollie Johnson managed to match his 2k PB (8:15) at Harrow Lodge. Also braving the cold there were Hudson Jeffery (10:58) and Henley Jeffery (15:18). Over at the very slippy Lake Meadows event Daniel Smith ran brilliantly to finish second (8:49)

Coming Up

Round 4 of the Essex Cross Country League takes place in Hockley on Saturday – they have the best (only?!) café of all the cross country races so worth coming for that reason alone! But seriously – we need you to help us score as a team and would be grateful to anyone (Yr7 upwards) who comes and runs. A reminder to register if you are planning to do the Essex XC, SEAA XC championships or SEAA indoor championships in January – an email has been sent round.
