The last couple of weeks have seen a very successful start to cross country season for our Beagles with some brilliant results in the first round of the Essex league. We know that there are lots of school cross countries taking place too currently – do remember to let us know how your athlete is getting on!
National Road Relays
Whilst most of our runners were in Hainault last weekend, three of our U13 girls were doing us very proud on a national stage at the English Road Relay Championships in Birmingham. Taking on teams from around the country the girls were running over 3.88k. Taking on the first leg Amalie Twydell stayed with the front pack to hand over in 18th (15:35). Aria Sabado ran the second leg holding the team’s position well to finish her turn in 19th (15:54). Madison Kindler charged off at pace doing her best to close the gaps and had a great run taking the team to 5th in an effort that also saw her pick up the fastest female U13 leg of the race (13:14).
Well done all on a brilliant result and an amazing experience. 5th in the country is something to be proud of!
Berlin Marathon
Congratulations to Keith Thornton who travelled over to Berlin in order to compete in the highly regarded Berlin marathon. A strong effort throughout saw him finish in 3:31.06.
Essex XC League
It was a beautiful day today for the return of the Essex cross country league which saw a bumper turnout from our Beagles with 60 athletes taking part.
First race of the day was the U11’s event over 1500m and the first opportunity for our youngest runners to take on cross country outside of school events. We were incredibly impressed at how well they all did. A brilliant run by Lianne Esterhuysen saw her finish first female (and 3rd overall) in 5:36. With some of our U13 girls at the National Road relays we had just the two brilliant girl performances in Hainault. Caitlin Phillips ran strongly to finish 8th (13:51) and Grace Lander did a great job to finish 13th (14:31).
The U15 race over 4k saw a dominant performance by our girls who easily finished as first team in a race that saw Summer Smith finish as first female (13:55). Well done too to Heidi Woodley in 2nd (14:21), Missy Tiller 7th (16:14), Izzy Young 11th (16:35), Esme Thomas 12th (16:40), Isabel
Forrest 18th (17:33) and Katie Lowe 36th (20:55).
The boys did a brilliant job too with Jude Hearn taking second place (13:32). And amazing running from Orly Morton 11th (14:30), Mattie Delea 19th (14:54), Jake Mitchell 20th (14:57), Frankie Edwards 32nd (15:37), Ollie Johnson 33rd (15:40), Matthew Jones 35th (15:46), and Charlie Lingley 55th (21:08).
Over 6km, the U17 races also saw some brilliant Beagles performances. The women easily finished as first team with Olivia Forrest 1st (20:21), Evie Warn 2nd (21:22) and Mara Thomas 6th (24:02). And the men’s race saw Max Sanderson finish second (18:30) and Preston Taylor 4th (19:12).
Last but not least were our adult runners and we are immensely proud of all in this category. In particular, we were thrilled to have a men’s team for the first time at the event. We also want to say a massive well done to our sole female adult runner who was also making her Beagles debut. It was a super performance from Lorraine Massarella over 6km who finished 29th overall in 25:34 and was 3rd in her age group!
The Beagles men ran 8km and first Beagle home was Dean Savery who finished 19th overall (and first in his age group) in 28:28. Parkrun and Junior parkun round up – 28th/29th September
It was a chilly but sunny Saturday morning for our local parkrun events, and we had a good range of Beagles out attempting their 5k’s.
At Valentines, Stuart Crowther (20:06) took on the course for the first time and just missed out on his sub-20 goal, nevertheless finishing an excellent 10th place overall and achieving the highest male age grade (81.92%) by a considerable margin. At Raphael, an impressive run from Emily Brewington (21:39) saw her finish 2nd female and 36th overall (from a field of 396). Emily was just 19 seconds off her PB which will surely be tested again soon. A new PB by over 2 minutes for Lily Tyler (26:40) who finished 130th while Freya Brewington (28:50) and Stuart Bennett (32:27) also enjoyed their runs.
At Chelmsford, Adam Armour (20:49) finished 31st while also taking part was Harriet Ward (36:04). Meanwhile, at Wickford Memorial, Scott Brooks (18:30) was on form again taking 1st place overall by 3 seconds and at Sizewell, Sophie Bickerstaff (20:41 PB) also ran well, finishing 9th overall and 2nd female, taking 2 minutes off her course best from a year ago. At Billericay, Mason Grindrod* (21:47 PB) ran well to take 15th and improved on his previous best time by 16 seconds.
Finally, at Brentwood, we had 4 runners. Simon Knightbridge (19:28) ran strongly to take 2nd place while Elliot Worth (21:18) finished 13th. Iola Thomas (27:28 PB) secured her course best while another of our younger females, Nora Heidemans (31:20), completed the challenging course for the first time.
On Sunday, another fresh morning greeted our juniors taking part in their 2k runs. A good turn out of Beagles was to be found at Harrow Lodge where Matthew Jones (07:31) was just pipped to 2nd place, while Emily Brewington (08:07) continued a good weekend of running to take 3rd and 1st female, crossing the line just 3 seconds off her best. Willow Smith (09:06) took 4th, while just a couple of places behind was Zachary Watson (09:40), closely followed in 8th by Ezra-Zion Gooch (09:41). Freya Brewington (10:15) also ran well, finishing 11th.
Over at Hutton Rec., another good showing of Beagles with Nora Heidemans (09:41) best placed overall as she finished 10th. Just 1 place behind was Alexandra Johnston (09:45) while Bailee Abrahams (09:58) took 13th. Camilla Nash (10:02 PB) picked up her course best time by 4 seconds, just 2 weeks after her last PB! In 18th was Jessica Thomson* (10:11), 1 place ahead of Chloe Thomson* (10:21). Max Morris (10:39) finished 21st and Joshua Thomson* (11:25) 30th.
At Chelmsford, Madison Kindler (06:52 PB) was in fine form as she took 1st place by over 20 seconds and scored an impressive age grade of 87.74%. Adam Armour (07:53) also had a fine run, finishing 4th. Finally, just the one runner at Lake Meadows as Liam Worth (09:11) took 7th place from a field of 80 runners.
Parkrun and Junior parkun round up – 5th / 6th October
With many Beagles taking on the hills of Hainault on Saturday, numbers were down from our usual attendance on Parkrun’s 20th anniversary.
However, we had several runners at Raphael where Simon Knightbridge (18:03) put in a strong effort to finish 2nd from over 400 attendees. Also running very well and finishing 1st female was Jemimah Knightbridge* (20:01). Keith Thornton (24:13) finished 79th while Lily Tyler (27:26) and Stuart Bennett (30:52) also put in good performances.
Meanwhile at a crowded Chelmsford, just the 2 runners as Liam Worth (24:56) and Elliot Worth (24:57) remarkably managed to finish in exactly the same positions (205th & 207th) as their last visit a couple of weeks ago.
On Sunday, Adam Armour (07:47) put in a fine performance to finish 2nd at Chelmsford juniors while similarly impressive at Harrow Lodge was Matthew Jones (07:19) who took 1st place and finished just 7 seconds outside his PB. Jacob Stanley (09:06) was another to come close to his best, finishing 7th, while Ethan Wilson* (9:12), Finley Smith* (09:17), Zachary Watson (10:00) and Freya Brewington (10:02 PB) also had great runs, Freya topping her best time by 5 seconds and tantalisingly close to a 9-minute 2k.
At Lake Meadows, Edward Cornwall* picked up a new PB as well as a second place finish (7:58). Finally, at Hutton Rec., Liam Worth (09:42) led the Beagles in, finishing 2nd overall. Elise Gosling (10:58) and Danel Esterhuysen (11:12) also had good runs.
Well done to all our runners this weekend. Can we please remind you that we can only pick up your results in the parkun club report if you register yourself as being part of the club in your parkrun profile. Unfortunately the club report only works on the Saturday parkruns so we are unable to spot performances at junior parkruns behind the local ones. Feel free to contact us if you need help setting up your profile or if you want to tell us about your run.
Coming up
A very exciting weekend to look forward too with the Essex XC relays taking place in Weald Park. There is also lots of schools cross country action with the first rounds of the English Schools Cup taking place, along with some district events. Good luck to all participating! We also look forward to awarding our first Jack Petchey Award Winners – look out for an announcement next week!
