The last fortnight has seen the end of the track season with some great performances for our athletes at the Southern Intercounties event and at the Havering open. We’ve also had lots of fun with some interesting events – the Super Tri, Underground 5k and the Mo minithon. Last season’s rearranged National XC also saw an opportunity to look ahead to XC season.
Southern Intercounties
This weekend saw a last opportunity for our athletes to represent Essex on track, this time at the Southern Intercounties in Horspath, Oxford. Up against 9 other counties the competition was tough!
On Saturday, Evie Warn raced up an age group to U20 and competed over the 2000m steeplechase. Once again demonstrating her growing strength in the event, Evie came second in the age group with her time of 7:35.14 – a PB.
On Sunday we had three Beagles competing over the 1500m. First up was Jude Hearn in the U15 race with his usual strong start and commitment to pushing against tough competition saw a good run and a 5th place finish – 4:21.74. Olivia Forrest (U17) took a different approach to her race keeping the pace slow to try something tactical. Unfortunately, getting boxed in at a crucial point meant her late charge to the line couldn’t quite get to the front, and she took silver – 4:43.4. Finally Max Sanderson (U17) took a dominant front running approach to the race, really breaking his field up and showing his strength earning him the win – 4:03.12.
Making the most of the day, and helping Essex to score more points, Olivia also took part in the triple jump competition! Jumping off a 9 meter board for the first time, Olivia built on her performances with every jump ultimately adding over a metre to her PB with a best jump of 10.17m.
Well done all – a great way to end the season.
Crown to Crown 5k
The final Crown to Crown 5K of the summer season saw two age group winners with Ollie Johnson finishing first U18 boy (20:03) and 9th overall. Ollie also won the champion of champions prize for best U18 Male over the season. Amalie Twydell was first U18 girl (22:07) and Matthew Jones was 17th overall (21:18). Well done and thank you Denise for the photos!
National XC
The English National Cross County in Weston Park was an event rearranged from last cross country season and very much outside of the normal XC cycle!
First Beagle of the day was U13 Amalie Twydell who made a really confident start to her 3k race. Battling well throughout against a field of 250 girls, Amalie did a great job to finish 131st in 14:11.
Max Sanderson’s U17 race was double the distance at 6k and Max showed commitment throughout sticking to the lead pack and staying in touch. Despite a slightly mistimed final sprint (having hoped the finish was appearing earlier than it actually was) he did a brilliant job and ended the race 12th overall in 19:14.
The final race for our Beagles was the U15 girls 4k race and Olivia Forrest started with great intent leading the field off strongly and dominating for the first lap. Sadly it wasn’t her day over the full distance, but she still came away with a brilliant bronze medal – 14:54. Evie Warn once again showed her cross country strength with a really strong run, despite an early fall, that saw her finish 18th – 15:55. Also having a good race was Isabel Forrest who seemed happy to be back in a cross country, finishing 77th – 17:34. Finally Missy Tiller followed up a fast start with a committed effort to finish 80th in 17:44. As a team the girls finished 6th overall.
Huge congratulations all. We look forward to the proper cross country season starting next month! Thanks to Laurence S for the additional photography.
Watford Open
At the last Watford Open this year, Aria Sabado had a good run over 800m to finish in 2:47.32. Whilst Max Sanderson and Owen Adams were in the same competitive 800 heat which saw Max finish in 1:57.43 and Owen in 2:04.33. Thank you Laurence for the photos.
Mo Minithon
A really fun event for our younger athletes took place at the weekend at Lee Valley. Hosted by Mo Farah who was very much on selfie duty all day! We are thoroughly impressed at all the amazing performances we saw – well done all!

Jude Deal (U11) – 200m – 35.13, 600m – 2:01.65
George Kyprianou (U11) – 200m – 36.31
Podium 5k Underground
A more unusual event for Olivia Forrest on Friday night, who took on the Podium 5k underground race. Staged at the Capital Carts track below Canary Wharf, the event consisted of a semi final and final each of 5 laps of the go kart track! The 2.5k course was full of tight turns making for an exciting race environment and the standards were high with an elite line up in place. In Olivia’s semi final she went out hard and stuck at the front trying to gain experience of the course, a strategy that saw her take 3rd in 6:45. Racing again just over a hour later she again stuck to the front pack and pushed hard to maintain places ultimately finishing 8th but improving her time to 6:41.
Havering Open
Our last track and field event of the outdoor season! Congratulations to all of the Beagles who competed at Sunday’s Havering Open.
On track we saw some brilliant hurdling over 75m from Evie Abbot (U15) who won her race with a strong performance of 12.64.
The U15 girls 100m saw strong sprints from Honey Peck (13.61) and Katie Lowe (13.89) finishing 3rd and 4th respectively. Katie also doubled up with a 200m run of 29.16 to finish 3rd.
Over 800m, Daisy Middlemiss (U15) had a good run of 2:41.47 whilst Frankie Edwards (U15) ran 2:29.3 over the same distance.
Luca Patrick (U15) had a productive day with a good long jump of 4.93m and a 200m sprint of 27.31.
Well done too to Eleanor Angeli (U15) who was also in action throwing the hammer – best throw of 14.47m.

Well done to all our runners this weekend. Can we please remind you that we can only pick up your results in the parkun club report if you register yourself as being part of the club in your parkrun profile. Unfortunately the club report only works on the Saturday parkruns so we are unable to spot performances at junior parkruns behind the local ones. Feel free to contact us if you need help setting up your profile or if you want to tell us about your run.
Triathlon News
Super Tri!
In what felt like Beagles domination at the Super Tri in London on Sunday, we saw lots of brilliant results and a great experience for our competitors who all managed to meet many of their triathlon heroes at this brilliant staged event.
In Tristar One it was victory for Blossom Smith with a great performance out front of the pack.
In Tristar Two it was victory for Madison Kindler, a brilliant 5th place for Aria Sabado and an excellent race too from Sophie Bickerstaff.
In Tristar Three it was victory for Summer Smith and a super third for Heidi Woodley.
IRC
The big final of the triathlon season sees athletes selected by their regions to compete against each other at Mallory Park. With a number of Beagles involved it was an incredibly exciting weekend – individual events on Saturday (heats and finals) and relays on Sunday.
Huge congratulations to:
Summer Smith (TS3) – a strategic heat saw Summer finish 7th (16:42), before she used her strengths to full success in the individual final taking victory pretty much on the finish line (15:33)!
Heidi Woodley (TS3) – a tightly packed heat saw Heidi finish in the leading pack in 7th (17:02) before following that up with another 7th place finish in the final and an improved time (16:12).
Madison Kindler (TS2) – a strong performance in the heat saw Madison finish 2nd (11:36), putting her all into the final and improving her time by a minute, Madison came 2nd again (10:35).
Aria Sabado (TS2) – new to triathlon this season, Aria had a great IRC with a 4th place finish in her heat (11:37) and a 9th place finish in the final (11:04).
Sophie Bickerstaff (TS2) – having thankfully recovered from a mid season injury to get to the IRC start line, Sophie did a great job in the finals – finishing 11th in her heat (12:00) and 24th in the final (11:42).
In the relays – Team East won bronze in the tristar 3 and tristar 2 races. Well done all!
Woking Aquathlon
On Sunday, Ollie Trevor and Isabel Forrest travelled to Woking to take the opportunity to compete in an end of season aquathlon. The journey proved to be worthwhile with Isabeltaking gold in Tristar 3 (19:18) and Ollie finishing 4th in Tristar 2 (16:13). Well done both!
