We have seen a remarkable week of competition with the English National Championships, British Masters Championships and a whole heap of Open’s and accompanying PB’s! We’d also like to take the opportunity to wish those of you off on holiday a lovely break.
English National U15/U17 Championships
Friday evening saw the opening session of the England Athletics National Championships and some brilliant results for our four Beagles.
First up was Evie Warn who took on the U17 1500m steeplechase in a packed field of 14 runners. A strong and confident performance saw Evie use her speed well between barriers to finish an incredible 5th with a new PB of 5:26.36.
Summer Smith took control of her U15 3000m race with a brilliant display of strength and front running holding on for gold despite a late challenge in final stages – 9:52.73.
Olivia Forrest also ran from the front in her U17 3000m, and was well away from her competition after the opening laps to take another dominant victory and gold medal – 9:40.13.
In the final U17 3000m race of the night, Max Sanderson gave it his all pushing the field with some front running all the way up to the last 200 metres when he was overtaken in the sprint. A brilliant run and a first national medal – silver in 8:50.80.
Saturday’s session saw sprinter Stephanie Smith compete in the U15 300m.
Some withdrawals saw the event change from a proposed 4 heats and semi-finals with final, into 3 heats into Final – Stephanie in heat 1. Running her tactical race in lane 4, in what turned out to be the fastest heat, she fought hard coming off the turn bringing herself back into a fighting photo finish with only 2 1/100ths of second between her and 3rd place. A time of 41.63 is only 8/100th’s outside her PB.
Whilst not progressing beyond the heats, Stephanie was only 0.14 secs from qualifying for a place in the final. Her placing of 10th overall when combined with the experience gained at this national level can only be seen as a positive outcome and evidence of her steady progression in this event.
Congratulations to all 5 on their amazing achievements at this year’s National Championships. Specials thanks also to Mark for the Saturday session pictures and report.
British Masters Championships
On Saturday, Beagles race walker Stuart Bennett competed at the British Masters Championships in Derby. A strongly contested 3000m race walk, Stuart took a strategic approach to the race and kept focus on form which saw him take victory in the event with his time of 17:42.68. Congratulations Stuart!
Watford Wednesday
Just two Beagles at Watford this week for the bi-weekly event which saw both competing over 1500m. Aria Sabado picked up a great new 3 second PB to finish in 5:26.0 whilst Amalie Twydell had a good run to finish in 5:30.65.
Serpentine 5k
Congratulations to Adam Armour who ran this month’s Serpentine 5k and finished inside the top 100 runners in 20:43!
BFTTA
Always a popular event for our sprinters, Sunday’s BFTTA saw another set of strong performances from the squad with the double 100m opportunity providing great new PB’s.
James Gillingham – 100m Round 1 – 11.08, Round 2 – 11.00 (PB)
Kairhys Hoyte – 100m Round 1 – 13.46 (PB), Round 2 – 13.59, 200m – 28.50
Dolci Hoyte – 100m Round 1 – 14.50, Round 2 – 14.50, 200m – 31.06

A bright Saturday morning saw another great turnout of Beagles at parkrun. Deciding on a tough start to Saturday, Alex and Isabelle Young took on the Hadleigh parkrun with Alex finishing 2nd (19:28) and Isabelle first female in 8th (23:38). Keith Thornton travelled to the much flatter Maldon Prom parkrun and was rewarded with a course PB (21:08). Well done to all our runners this weekend. Can we please remind you that we can only pick up your results in the parkun club report if you register yourself as being part of the club in your parkrun profile. Unfortunately the club report only works on the Saturday parkruns so we are unable to spot performances at junior parkruns behind the local ones. Feel free to contact us if you need help setting up your profile or if you want to tell us about your run.

Coming up
With holiday season in full swing, a quieter week is envisaged for the Beagles. Lee Valley Sprints Evening, Ealing Mile and the Wimbledon Hercules 5000m night may all see Beagles competing – good luck! We would also encourage everyone to watch the athletics at the Paris Olympics – a great opportunity to learn from the best!
