July has been full of high class competition with national finals, area championships and a plethora of good quality open events. We’ve also seen some challenging conditions – from incredibly hot temperatures to monsoon conditions – July has had it all! But it’s all meant brilliant experiences for our athletes as they continue on their personal athletic journeys! Well done all.

English Schools Track and Field Finals

It was a scorching hot day for the first English Schools session but that didn’t stop our athletes putting in some amazing performances with all three runners today safely qualifying for the second day of finals.

In the junior girls 1500m, Summer Smith led her heat throughout, controlling the race and doing what was needed to qualify finishing second in 4:42.78. Heidi Woodley’s heat was a faster affair but also saw a dominant front run from Heidi who finished first in 4:31.01.

Max Sanderson took on the senior boys 3000m staying calm in a very tactical and closely matched race where slow pace in the early laps meant a fast last 400m. Max finished his heat in second on 9:01.36

Day two of English schools and it was another scorcher which saw some more superb performances.

Evie Warn had an incredibly strong start to her intermediate girls 1500m steeplechase. Confidence over the barriers saw her run with the leaders and make good progress eventually finishing 7th in 5:18.78.

Olivia Forrest ran in the biggest field of the day with 21 intermediate girls taking on the 3000m. The split start helped her take an early lead and despite lots of jostling she held her position well sticking to the lead pack in the mid race before finishing 7th in 10:06.18.

Following his great run on day one in the senior boys 3000m heat, Max Sanderson lined up in a very strong final. But he kept calm, showed real race maturity and kept himself in contention throughout and had an incredibly strong finish to take 4th overall in 8:31.66.

Finally our junior girls Summer Smith and Heidi Woodley gave brilliant performances for the second day running over 1500m. Following their race strategies well they worked well together to push the pace at the front and put themselves in contention. The final 200m sprint saw Summer take bronze in 4:31.22 and Heidi finish 5th in 4:33.64.

Well done too to new Beagle Emmanuel Oyedele who was representing his school county Hampshire in the junior boys 80m hurdles finishing 4th in his heat – 11.98.

Well done to all our parkrun representatives. Can we please remind you that we can only pick up your results in the parkun club report if you register yourself as being part of the club in your parkrun profile. Unfortunately, the automatic club report only works on the Saturday parkruns so we are unable to spot performances at junior parkruns beyond the local ones we monitor (Harrow Lodge, Hutton Rec., Chelmsford, Lake Meadows, Great Notley and Northlands). Feel free to contact us if you need help setting up your profile or if you want to tell us about your runs further afield.

Coming up

Holiday season in August means that there is less going on athletics wise but we’re sure the Beagles will still be busy! The Essex 5K road championships take place, as do the England Athletics Age group championships – both expected to be great events. There will be more opens with Stratford Speed, Watford and Blackheath and Bromley all staging events. And if you are on holiday then we hope you have a lovely restful time!
